Once upon a time, there was an MP3 player. A quite old one. It could just about play an MP3 with variable bit rate, but was horrible at guessing the total runtime. It basically took the first chunk or whatever and used its bit rate and the total file size to guesstimate it.

In comes “Waiting for Custeau” from Jean Michel Jarre. A piece of about 45 minutes, but as the first few seconds are rather eventless and therefore having an extreme low bit rate, the player estimated a total run time of about two days.

My coworker back then, a fan of Techno music, was a bit annoyed about the slow and relaxing sounds and stated something like “how long do I have to endure this crap”, and then looked at the display. That face was priceless.
