I would have to think that state schools get federal funding, and federal funding is about to disappear. As a casual fan of college football, it got me wondering what the downstream effects are going to be.

Ain’t nobody (D1) using government money for sports programs lol
For headline sports programs like football and basketball, sure. But a lot of scholarships for stuff like lacrosse, track and field, virtually all women’s sports, etc come from the Department of Education.
The true casualty of this and Title IX fights
The federal Education Department is a very small department. It’s basically the college student aid program and (typically) non-controversial and often universal grants to state and local governments for K-12 stuff (like special education).
At major D-I schools, “revenue sports” like football, basketball (men’s and women’s nowadays but much smaller than football), and sometimes baseball or a random other sport turns a profit and funds the athletic department along with donors. Sometimes, there’s an “athletics fee” students pay that (ideally) funds things for a gym and intramural sports.
But generally, it’s donors. And college presidents keep sports around to advertise the school and keep alumni attached so they donate. A rich alumnus might not donate to sports but the college president wines and dines them at a football game.
Trump is trying to use special education/disabilities (schools for the blind, deaf, etc) as a shield from criticism.
If I had a gun and trump was in the room with me I’d beat him to death with it while screaming that I’m sick of people using me as a shield for their shitty behavior.

Maybe these schools will be forced to go mask-off and drop all their nonprofit academic programs to focus on football, their true cash cow.
